LAN speed issues

Well it's my first day on the job and the company already has me busy fixing stuff. Management were complaining that the LAN was slow. Apparently, it has been slowing down over the past month and some applications have been taking time out.

I first checked to see if the LAN had a virus or worms. I didn't think this was the case as management said that the company Firewall has been killing all the worms. They have asked me to clear all the dead worms out of the Firewall. I'll do that later this week. Still it wouldn't hurt to flush the LAN with an anti-worm and anti-virus treatment.

Having located the LAN hub in the computer room, the problem became obvious. The cables were all over the place and a complete mess. Whoever used the switch last must have been a spaghetti coder. All the data frames were forced to take too many hops and this was slowing the network.

Straightening all the cables took pretty much all day. When I got back into the office, management were furious that the network had been down all this time. However, when I told them about all the cables I cleaned up they seemed to calm down and understand.

I guess we'll see tomorrow some better network performance.
