Simian Technologies Site Visit
Today, Ian Howler from Simian Technologies came by to service our LAN switch. Apparently, it was due for a 100,000 Gbit service.
The first thing to do was flush out all the residue Ethernet frames that have collected on the edges of various port buffers. Ian connected port one of the switch to his laptop. The hard disk of his laptop had special lubricating files, designed to clean up any residue data. Once this was finished he ran a special diagnostic tool on the switch. I was shocked on the results it showed.
Apparently, some of the switch ports are displaying excessive wear due to packet friction. As you know, packet friction occurs when there are too many collisions or fatal collisions. This friction has caused temperatures of over 293 Kelvin, which began to disintegrate some of the pins on the RJ-45 sockets.
Simian have been working on a solution to this common problem and are willing for us to beta test it. The idea is to have a parity wire for each twisted pair, effectively becoming a twisted triplet. In the event of an imminent collision, the frame can pull over to the parity wire to avoid the collision. We will be upgrading our cables to Category 7.5 UTT (Unshielded Twisted Triplet) over the next few days.

Hi Claude,
Just wondering what sort of experience you had with the guys from Simian Tech as my company's support contract is up for renewal soon and our current service group - Primate Information Systems Support and their supply arm World Internet Network Equipment Getting And Repairing (based in Germany I belive) - Have had some issues lately in that they no longer seem to be able to comply with industry service standards. Last week they Told us they would have tech on site at 2pm to sort out some problems we were having with low latency. It's bad enough that the guy turned up at 1:30 with all the equipment needed only to tells us he didn't think what we were seeing was a problem (as if there is nothing wrong with a 1ms pong response) he then proceeded to leave and not even invoice us.
So let me know what you thought of Simian and maybe we can get them to take a look at LAN as the problem still seems to be happening.

SuperCupCake,
We used to have the "Ultimate Performance" support contract with Primate Information Systems Support (P.I.S.S. U.P.) but found that it caused too many headaches.
We decided that it was the wrong decision to take the P.I.S.S. and after we saw what Simian offered for the same price we told our management to (take) P.I.S.S. off.
Unfortunately, it seems both Simian and Primate techs have far too many fleas.
You can't win them all...
